Complimentary Therapies

There are many complementary therapies out there and they are fast becoming the go-to alternative to treat many ailments from IBS to the side effects of cancer.

More and more medical professionals are using acupuncture, homoeopathy and reflexology in day to day treatment of patients.

My most effective personal experience has been with reflexology. This is based on the ancient belief that there is a connection between certain points on the soles of your feet and vital organs and glands in the body.

Reflexologists use a specific massage technique to stimulate these points to unblock energy channels, work with Meridian lines and create a balance within the body.

Crazy stuff some might think, however, I have been a firm believer in this alternative therapy since my mid-twenties when I suffered from hormonal imbalances. I had seen my own GP on several occasions and tried many conventional methods to try and alleviate the terrible side effects of my monthly cycle. A lot of pain, skin breakouts and migraines made me feel like a prisoner for at least a whole week once a month, every month.

A colleague, Elaine, who practised reflexology suggested I give it go. I must admit the whole idea was more than a bit "out there". I mean, how could a bit of foot massage help me when conventional medicine and procedures hadn't even touched the sides. However, I was at a desperate point and would have tried everything.

Elaine recommended a course of six sessions, one session a week over six weeks. Well, within two sessions I could feel the difference in my mood and my migraines. Surely this was pure coincidence, right?

No! Each week I saw and felt changes both physically and mentally. The pain subsided dramatically, my skin looked the best it had since I was around 10 years old and I was actually able to function during THAT dreaded week.

After the course finished I went on to have one session a month for the next few months until I felt I had fully ironed out all the complications of the monthly week from hell. For me, embarking on that course of reflexology opened my eyes to alternative therapies. To this day I try where possible to use reflexology not only as a cure but also as a preventative measure to keep my immune system strong and healthy.

Other benefits of reflexology include...

  • Boosting Energy Levels
  • Eliminating Toxins
  • Stimulating Nerve Function
  • Inducing Relaxation
  • Speeding Recovery after major injury or surgery
  • Increasing Fertility
  • Assisting with the side effects of bowel conditions such as IBS and Chrons
